Week 5

The hot topic of the moment seems to be global warming. specifically, the news that some scientist may have fabricated data to make them appear to support the notion of global warming. i watched them debate this on fox news. can you guess what side they were on?
that is one of the most fascinating aspects of human pyschology in my opinion. the way that people who watch fox news agree to even the wildest of completely unfounded stories. where does this impulse come from? why are some people substantially more likely to blindy beleive that Barack Obama isn't an American citizen than others? and do they honestly beleive that someone wouldn't check on that before running for president?
and why are certain people more easily affected by the fear-mongering spewed by fox? where does a flip get switched to make them beleive whatever they hear?

now this is obviously not an issue on affecting republicans, democrats have more than their fair share of blind followers to. the interesting part to me though is the ferocity with which people will defend things that they have never seen a shred of proof of. surely this has to be associated with a mild form of narcicissm, because average people don't have an unearened sense of superiority and correctness.

i'm not writing this becuase i have an answer to my question, or even a theory. i am legitimately wondering how this occurs and why. any ideas?

  1. wanna hear a joke? ...fox news!
but seriously, it is really hard to know what to believe these days. everyone seems to have some sort of agenda. i have noticed though that in english you are always the most unbiased person there. basically, 'show me the proof!'
good philosophy...but does it apply to santa clause? ;)

  2. I agree with George Washington when he said political parties will divide the nation. Everyone feels like they have to pick a side. I believe that it's something of a defense mechanism. If you truly believe in something, you form a bond of some sort with it. When you perceive people attacking it, you rush to defend it with whatever you can, even if all you have are fabrications. Good questions :)

  3. I agree with Gabby. When someone has an idea that they truly believe in, they stick to it, and when that idea is being attacked, people rush to protect their ideas.
